Perak DAP vice-chairman Aziz Bari said Takiyuddin’s stand went against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s clarification that Parliament can meet during the emergency.
“It’s clear that the government doesn’t want to advise the Palace to hold Parliament proceedings and this goes against what is stated under the Emergency Ordinance,” he told reporters after filing the report at the Perak police headquarters here today.
“To wait for the government to advise (the King) is like waiting for cats to grow horns. Anything can happen from now to August, that’s why I’m lodging a police report.”
Aziz, who was joined by DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, hoped that more people would lodge reports over the matter to pressure the government to call for Parliament to sit.
He said Putrajaya could get the advice of experts, including the health ministry, to see how Parliament can reconvene, especially when schools have already reopened.
“All opposition MPs don’t have any issues with Parliament reconvening. It’s the government that has issues with it,” he said.
Last week, Takiyuddin said the Cabinet would not advise the King to allow Parliament to reconvene during the emergency as there is no need for it to sit since the King is able to enact laws through the Emergency Ordinance.
He also said the government was concerned about the health and safety of elected representatives, pointing out that 77 of the 222 MPs were aged above 60.
“The calling of any Parliament session must follow the Cabinet’s decision. So, right now the Cabinet is advising the King that there won’t be any Parliament sitting. That’s the situation now,” Takiyuddin said.
