The DAP secretary-general questioned if the anti-graft agency would “demonstrate its independence” by probing Muhyiddin, adding that MACC should at least state that party-hopping in exchange for favours was a corrupt practice.
He said Choong’s revelation was reminiscent of an audio recording released last year purportedly of Muhyiddin offering government posts and positions in exchange for support.
“Umno’s Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah also revealed that he rejected an offer by the prime minister to be Petronas’ chairman because it was unconstitutional.
“Ironically, the prime minister had made fighting corruption one of his key commitments in government. However, reality does not support Muhyiddin’s rhetoric.
“In the 2020 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) report, Malaysia dropped six rungs to the 57th position, compared to 62nd in 2017, 61st in 2018 and 51st in 2019,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Choong reportedly said Muhyiddin had promised him an official position that would give him the platform to rebuild the economy, saying: “If I have the power, I can get all the ministries to sit down together and discuss the issues.
“I did not want to be a minister or a deputy minister. I did not want to manage a GLC (government-linked company) as well. I just wanted to solve the problems (caused by Covid-19).”
