KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has listed three key things his party must understand before going into the 15th general election if it aims to win the polls.

Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said Umno must not confuse who its real enemies are, adding that “wolves in sheep’s clothing” were more destructive to the party.

He also said Umno needs to address members of the party who pretend to support it but whose “souls” are easily bought.

“They still need Umno to be in power, but their hearts belong elsewhere. They have been tainted by materialistic pleasures. To them, Umno is nothing more than something for them to ride on. When Umno’s strong, they’re near. When we’re weak, they give in.”

Thirdly, he said, Umno must reiterate its stand that anyone who is an enemy of the Malays and Islam is an enemy of Umno.

“As long as they have not gone beyond this line, Umno is very open to exploring any path of cooperation offered,” he said when officiating the party’s Wanita, Puteri and Youth wings’ assembly here today.

Mohamad said the performance of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) governments had shown that Barisan Nasional (BN) had led the country well for 60 years.

He said the people needed to be convinced that there can be no stable government in Malaysia without the support of the largest Malay party. “And there is no Malay party with influence and moderation like Umno.”

He said Umno would not be pressuring any parties to join BN in forging possible partnerships. Instead, it would be employing a “work with BN” approach to ensure stability in the government.

“This will be our slogan to make room for Umno to explore various forms of strategic partnerships without being tied down by various political consensus and conditions that are restrictive.

“It’s not structure and formalities that we prioritise but a working formula,” he said.

Mohamad also urged the party’s members to avoid being caught up in “political discussions” on social media, saying these kinds of debates do not benefit Umno in any way.

“What will ensure our victory (in the elections) is when we champion issues and resolve the problems faced by the people.”
