Najib Razak said he felt reluctant about commenting on the failure of the government as Umno and BN members are in the Cabinet.

PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak says he does not understand why Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) members are still part of a “failed government”.

Taking to Facebook, he said these leaders seemed to value their positions more than taking into account the interests of the nation, people and party.

Najib said he had warned the party in October last year that Umno would bear some of the blame over Perikatan Nasional’s failure to govern well although it had no say in the government’s financial and economic direction.

This is in view of key ministerial positions for these portfolios being “monopolised” by Bersatu leaders, he said.

He said he felt reluctant about commenting on the #kerajaangagal (failed government) hashtag that had gone viral, since Umno and BN members were still ministers in the Bersatu-led government.

However, he said he started to realise that the PN government’s intentions were not right when Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin first tried to advise the King to declare a state of emergency in October 2020.

“I was also disappointed in the steps the government took to manage the Covid-19 situation at the time.

“For example, not making quarantine mandatory for those who returned from Sabah after the state polls.

“And then changing the self-quarantine period to three days despite the health ministry being aware that the overall incubation period for Covid-19 was around six days.”

In view of this, Najib said he advised the government to ban interstate travel immediately as the number of new Covid-19 cases in the peninsula were only in the double digits daily, but this call went unheeded.

This led to the third wave of infections hitting the peninsula from October onwards and continuing until today, he said.

He said if Covid-19 had been brought under control, the economy back to normal and foreign investments flowing in, the government wouldn’t have to spend so much money on aid packages to the point that the prime minister had to admit that the government did not have much money left.
