The former prime minister said not only had Parliament approved RM3 billion in the 2021 budget for vaccine purchase, but a supplementary amount of RM2 billion was also allocated later.
“The Perikatan Nasional government does not want to answer the pertinent question on why we need to touch our trust fund for this purpose.
“The government has borrowed RM85 billion and has been selling various assets of the country for the last four months,” Najib said on his Facebook.
Last week, the government passed an emergency ordinance allowing it to tap into KWAN for vaccine expenses. This has stirred a hornet’s nest, with many questioning the need for such a move.
Opposition leaders and members of civil society criticised the action, citing that the move was irresponsible.
Najib previously said KWAN is a trust fund that was meant for the future, when Malaysia’s oil resources run out.
He added that during his nine year tenure as prime minister, Barisan Nasional had never touched the KWAN funds.
Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan however rebutted this, saying KWAN funds had previously been used.
