PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry says the number of Covid-19 clusters linked to educational institutions has increased by 83.3% in seven days.

Health minister Dr Adham Baba said there were 12 education clusters last week but this had now increased to 22.

Due to the recent spate of education clusters, Adham said students with Covid-19 symptoms have been ordered to stay home.

“Similarly, parents or family members who are symptomatic, undergoing house surveillance order (HSO) or waiting for Covid-19 test results are asked not to send their children to school,” he said in a virtual press conference today.

He added that Covid-19 SOPs for during and after school sessions must be observed to curb transmissions in school.

Comparing the data for last week (April 11 to 17) with this week (April 18 to 24), he said Malaysia had reported a total of 68 new Covid-19 clusters, an increase of 6.3% from last week.

Of that number, 22 clusters belong to the education category, workplace (22), community (20), religious activities (three) and detention centres (one).

He noted that there are 352 active clusters now.

He said a total of 17,393 new positive cases had been recorded this week with a total of 390,252 cases so far.

Covid-19 testing capacity had also increased by 20.7% with 461,332 tests conducted this week.
