PETALING JAYA:
A public university student in Kuala Lumpur pleaded not guilty at the Johor Bahru sessions court to making an offensive statement on his Facebook account against the Tunku Mahkota of Johor.

The accused, Ahmad Muazz Ishak, 22, made the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.

He is accused of uploading the Facebook post, which was offensive to Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, on an account registered under the name of MuazzIshak.

According to the charge sheet, he was accused of committing the act at a fast-food premise in Jalan Pontian-Skudai in Johor on Feb 5.

The accused was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of one year or both, and a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence is continued after conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Qayyum Ramlan prosecuted while the accused was represented by Muhammad Valantino Ifni Ho Ridzuan.

Previously, Qayyum offered bail of RM10,000 with the accused having to report once every two weeks to the nearby police station until the case is completed.

The accused’s lawyer then applied for bail to be reduced to RM2,500 on the grounds that his client was still studying as a second-year student, majoring in social sciences in Kuala Lumpur and had no income.

The court set bail at RM3,000 with one surety, along with an additional condition requiring him to report to the Pantai police station in Kuala Lumpur every two weeks.

The court has set May 25 for the re-mention of the case.
