Online trading fraud a bane of Covid-19, say cops

Police have advised Malaysians to verify the authenticity of the outlets before making payment.

Online trading may have seen a boom during the Covid-19 movement control orders but unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous people using this to defraud their fellow Malaysians.

According to Petaling Jaya police, they have opened a total of 85 investigation papers on cases of online trading fraud involving losses estimated at RM650,809 from January to now.

District police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said 21 cases have gone to court with those linked to them already charged.

He said in a country that is being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, many individuals were trying to take advantage of online businesses and it had a high risk in terms of fraud.

“The commercial crime investigation department (CCID) of the district police headquarters has received many reports in relation to cases of fraud involving purchases of goods online via platforms such as on Mudah.my, Facebook, Instagram and others,” he said in a statement.

Fakhrudin advised the public not to be easily deceived by the advertised offers and that they should verify them before making payments.

“The public is also advised to check the CCID portal at https://ccid.rmp.gov.my before making any financial transactions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police also issued 15 summonses against traders at the Jalan Margosa morning market in Sri Damansara, here for not complying with standard operating procedures set by the National Security Council.

He said 13 summonses were issued to traders for not providing a MySejahtera QR Code and having no body temperature measuring device while two more were issued to customers for not scanning the MySejahtera QR Code.
