PETALING JAYA:
When Vijaya Kasinathan made her GrabFood order earlier this month, she made a mistake and then shrugged it off, not expecting the meal to come. Not only did her meal arrive, but it came with a side of kindness and compassion.

After ordering her dinner on her way out of Menara PGRM in Cheras, where she works, she realised once she arrived home in Bandar Kinrara that she had accidentally sent her dinner to her office address.

“When I realised what I’d done, I told the delivery boy not to worry and just keep the food,” she told FMT.

“But then he said he felt bad that I had nothing to eat that night and offered to send it all the way to my house, for free. I was bowled over.

“I told him that if he was still willing to come, to take care of his other orders first and only come when it was convenient.”

And yet, a little over half an hour later, he was at her door with the Madam Kwan’s she had ordered.

As a thank you, she passed the delivery rider an envelope with some money in it, which he initially resisted accepting.

Once he was convinced to accept the money, he left. He only realised that Vijaya had tipped him RM100 when he stopped to fill up his fuel tank.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Vijaya said on what came next. “The boy actually came back and tried to return the money. He said the RM100 I had given was too much.

“But I insisted. I told him that nobody could put a price on how he had helped us.”

Muhammad Azrul Abu Hassan, a 25-year-old military man who moonlights as a Grab rider, said it didn’t feel right to take her money.

“I didn’t help Ms Vijaya because I wanted a reward,” he said. “I just wanted to help her, especially since we are in the middle of the movement control order.”

He added that Grab had also given him a RM100 voucher as a reward after Vijaya informed them of what he had done.

Vijaya said the young man’s character shone through, and was glad to see such honesty and kindness in the young man.

“He’s clearly very well-raised. You can tell the kind of upbringing he must have had. For him to have tried to return the money … I mean who does that?”
