Fama to offer cheaper greens during MCO

Prices will be 5%-20% lower if customers shop at the agency's markets or online during this period.

Farmers have been advised to register with Fama to sell their vegetables and other products.
PUTRAJAYA:
With jobs lost and money hard to come by these days, shopping for necessities like fruits and vegetables has become difficult for consumers, but there are ways to cut costs.

The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) markets, for one, will offer cheaper fresh produce to consumers during this movement control order (MCO) period.

Fama deputy director-general Mohamad Mustahapa Awang said they had provided guidelines to farmers to sell their products between 5% and 20% cheaper than the market price.

He said farmers registered with the agency had also been trained to market their fresh produce on various online platforms.

“We have opened 42 controlled markets across Malaysia during this MCO.

“Besides that, we are also working with a private company, Mukmin Pay Sdn Bhd, to offer jobs for delivery riders to ship out fresh produce that customers purchase online,” Mustahapa said at a virtual press conference.

Besides that, he said Fama had also set up a crisis management centre to assist farmers facing problems marketing and selling their products.

Those interested or who have queries can call the centre’s hotline at 019-7476754, 013-3777100 or 010-7632684 between 8am and 7pm.

Alternatively, they can visit here to obtain more information.

“I know some farmers are not registered with us and problems such as too much fresh produce that cannot be sold may arise.

“I hope they can register with us so we can get their statistics and plan targeted sales of fresh produce every month,” Mustahapa added.
