PETALING JAYA:
Umno has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Perikatan Nasional-led government to follow the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s advice on reconvening Parliament.

In a statement, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the 14 days start today.

“Umno takes a firm stand in urging the government to respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers in calling for Parliament to sit as soon as possible, he said.

He said failure to do so by PN would be a sign of great disrespect to the Rulers.

The Bagan Datuk MP added the Umno Supreme Council will meet soon to decide on the next move.

Last week, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said he wants  Parliament to reconvene as soon as possible.

In a statement, the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the King was aware of Parliament’s important role in discussing issues involving Covid-19.

The Malay rulers also said there was no need for the nation to remain under a state of emergency after Aug 1, according to the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad.

He said the Malay rulers also called for state assemblies to reconvene soon.

A day before these statements were issued, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in a special address said Parliament can reconvene in September or October if the daily Covid-19 cases drop to below 2,000 daily.

This comes under the third phase of Muhyiddin’s National Recovery Plan.

Parliament last met in December last year.

In his statement today, Zahid said there was “no need to make excuses” over the term “as soon as possible”, adding that Umno fully supports the statements issued by the Palace and the Malay Rulers.

“It is crucial to have a sitting immediately to look into the demands and hopes of the rakyat who are facing hardship due to Covid-19,” he added.

Previously, Umno said it may withdraw its support for the government in August.
