Air Selangor announced that non-revenue water (NRW) rate stood at 28.6%, surpassing the 29.2% target, and fared better than the 29.7% in 2019 and 31.7% in 2018.

PETALING JAYA:
Air Selangor recorded RM2.18 billion in revenue last year, a 3.62% increase from the RM2.10 billion Klang Valley’s sole water distributor made in 2019.

Speaking at the virtual launch of Air Selangor’s 2020 sustainability report today, its chief executive officer Suhaimi Kamaralzaman noted the increase in revenue was achieved despite the business and supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the movement control orders.

Earlier in the year, Air Selangor announced that non-revenue water (NRW) rate stood at 28.6%, surpassing the 29.2% target set by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). Air Selangor’s NRW rate stood at 29.7% in 2019 and 31.7% in 2018.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Suhaimi said Air Selangor was looking to reduce even more water loss throughout its operations – targeting the NRW rate to drop to 24% by 2025, 20% by 2037 and 15% by 2049.

“This will optimise operational costs and increase our revenue,” he stated.

NRW is treated water that is produced but is “lost” or unaccounted for within the water operator’s distribution system. Losses can either be physical losses caused by leakages or burst pipes, or commercial loss due to inaccurate meter readings, water thefts and unbilled water usage.

Suhaimi also said Air Selangor achieved a pipe burst index of 8.87 bursts per 100km of pipeline last year, an improvement on the 9.61 bursts in 2019 and 13.52 bursts in 2018. The international benchmark is 13.

He added that as at December 2020, Air Selangor’s water reserve margin, or the difference between production capacity and usage, stood at 11.87%, marginally above the target of 11.37%. The water reserve margin was 5.87% in December 2018.

Touching on the importance of the inaugural sustainability report, Air Selangor’s head of risk management, Thavendran Loganathan, said it serves as a reference point for Air Selangor’s focus areas, strategies and programmes that contribute to water security.

“The sustainable management of water resources will become an increasingly critical matter in the future, especially with the onset of climate change,” he said.

“As the largest water operator in Malaysia, there is a need for us to provide safe and clean water, and we aim to lead the way by providing sustainable water management.”
