PETALING JAYA:
Umno MPs will continue supporting the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government until Parliament sits, says the party’s Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

He said this was one of the matters decided during the four-hour Umno Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday evening, which he claimed had been leaked by Annuar Musa.

“Now there are several parties who are attempting to spin the Supreme Council’s decision,” he said, referring to the party’s formal withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister.

Former Barisan Nasional secretary-general Annuar had, among others, claimed that not everything that was said during the meeting was mentioned by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his press statement.

Puad alleged that Annuar had leaked video recordings of the Supreme Council meeting to the Umno division heads, which contained other details that were discussed, including allowing Umno MPs to use their own discretion if there was a vote in Parliament.

“Where did he (Annuar) get all of this (the video recording). Who supplied it to him? Of course, it must have been the ‘scheme of things’ cluster who were there.”

Puad was referring to Umno leaders who were given Cabinet or GLC positions, allegedly as part of Muhyiddin’s strategy to buy himself support.

“Also mentioned (during the meeting) was that Umno MPs will continue to support the PN government until Parliament (reconvenes). It will only be another two weeks. Why was this fact not leaked by Annuar, too?

“Annuar has been a member of the Umno Supreme Council for a long time. Not everything will be mentioned in the press release. Plus, it is no secret there are a few MPs, including himself, who reject the Supreme Council decision.”

Puad revealed that at the meeting, deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had also warned that Umno’s pull-out may result in DAP supporting the prime minister as the party had supposedly signed a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CSA) with Muhyiddin.

“Was that true or was it propaganda? If this is true, then are we now in bed with a government that wants to ‘play nice’ with DAP so the prime minister can remain in power?”

He said it was clear the prime minister had felt he was “pushed to a corner” and that he had known that Umno would make a decision to withdraw its support for him.

Muhyiddin had appointed Ismail Sabri as his deputy, and Hishamuddin Hussein as the new senior minister for security on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the high-level meeting at the Umno headquarters.

Zahid, who announced later that the party was formally withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin, also called for his resignation.
