KOTA KINABALU:
Netizens took to a social media posting by an Austrian minister to vent their “frustrations and anger” at international trade and industry minister Azmin Ali.

Austrian federal minister for digital and economic affairs Margarete Schramböck had shared on her Facebook page the meeting she had with Azmin yesterday, thanking her Malaysian counterpart for the visit and also expressed the country’s interest in working closely in future.

But Malaysians, seemingly Azmin detractors, flooded her thread, being cordial and respectful towards Schramböck but warning her to be wary of the former PKR deputy president.

“Hope you can school him or you can take him forever to your country,” a netizen, under the name Khairil Hazwan Hamzah, posted.

Sathia Murthy also told the Austrian minister: “He is currently in the midst of a homeless crisis in his own party and he has this special ability of hopping — he may hop to your party in future.”

Fadly Bahktiar Othman cautioned that there better not be any hotels closing down in Austria due to his visit to the country.

“You must be honoured to meet a top minister from our country,” said one Sazali Amin, before adding: “Today our Covid-19 cases are over 9,000, the highest to date. If your country needs him, feel free to take him. We’ll be glad if you do. Thank you.”

Qurratul Ain saw the lighter side of the situation, saying: “The Austrian minister must be wondering why her posting has suddenly gone viral.”

The international trade and industry ministry (Miti) yesterday said several Austrian companies had expressed interest in investing in Malaysia due to its strategic position as a gateway to the Asia-Pacific region.

In a statement, it said that Azmin had met Schramböck during his trade and investment mission in Vienna to explore growth areas for bilateral trade and investment.
