Malaysia is already the fourth largest base for business jet fleets and the Terminal 2 redevelopment will see the business grow threefold, says Randhill Singh.

PETALING JAYA:
Terminal 2 at Subang Airport (LTSAAS) will be redeveloped into a state-of-the-art hangarage for business aviation, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has said.

This comes as part of MAHB’s regeneration plan for the airport, which has been submitted to the government for approval, as a step towards making it a leading aerospace and business aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region (Apac).

“The Terminal 2 redevelopment leverages Malaysia’s current position as the fourth largest base for business jet fleets in Apac,” said Randhill Singh, head of KLIA Aeropolis of Malaysia Airports.

“Our plan will act as a catalyst to grow the local business aviation market by almost threefold in the next 10 years, strengthening the position of Subang airport as the business aviation hub of the region.”

The development of Terminal 2 has been driven by engagement with local aerospace players, MAHB said, namely Berjaya Air Sdn Bhd and Smooth Route Sdn Bhd.

“The government’s approval of the LTSAAS regeneration plan is vital to cater to the expansion needs of these industry players,” MAHB said.

While the development plan from MAHB has already been submitted, the government is also said to be mulling a separate proposal from WCT Holdings Bhd, controlled by tycoon Desmond Lim, to operate the airport under a lease with the government continuing to own the land and the airport.

The latter plan has been met with stiff opposition. In response to the proposal, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan commented that any sale or lease of the airport to a private company “owned by a few rich individuals” was against national interests.

Similarly, MAHB chairman Zambry Abdul Kadir had also urged the government not to “liquidate” its ownership of the Subang airport to private entities, as it was the country’s strategic asset.
