The number of cases is more than 2,000 higher than the previous record of 13,215 infections on July 15.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 10,094 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 825,387.
In a press conference, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 980,491.
There are 147,386 active cases with 939 patients being treated in intensive care and 456 requiring respiratory assistance.
Meanwhile, the 144 deaths take the number of fatalities to 7,718.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 7,672, a record for the state.
Kuala Lumpur also registered a record high 2,063 cases followed by Kedah (937), Johor (722), Negeri Sembilan (682), Penang (530), Sabah (516), Sarawak (461), Pahang (457), Melaka (452), Perak (415), Kelantan (372), Terengganu (229), Putrajaya (41), Labuan (21) and Perlis (3).
There were 15,541 local infections today, comprising 13,365 Malaysians and 2,146 foreigners, as well as 32 imported cases.
Of the new cases, Noor Hisham said 29 of them were in category 5, 74 in category 4 and 102 in category 3. Overall, 98.7% of today’s cases were from category 1 or 2.
The 144 who died comprised 132 Malaysians and 12 foreigners. All but 25 had existing medical conditions. A total of eight were brought in dead.
Selangor also reported 66 fatalities – the highest number – followed by Kuala Lumpur (16), Johor (15), Melaka (13), Negeri Sembilan (10), Pahang (8), Kedah (6), Sarawak (3), Perak (2), Penang (2), Sabah (1), Terengganu (1) and Labuan (1).
Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate stood at 1.07.
Terengganu recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.44. Other states with R-noughts above 1.0 were Kedah (1.22), Putrajaya (1.22), Johor (1.2), Sabah (1.19), Penang (1.18), Kelantan (1.16), Pahang (1.15), Selangor (1.14), Melaka (1.11), Kuala Lumpur (1.09), Negeri Sembilan (1.06), Sarawak (1.04) and Perak (1.02).
