Around 10 cars were seen waving black flags and driving in a convoy around 11.20am, starting from the Bangsar LRT station and heading towards Dataran Merdeka before driving back to the same LRT station.
The convoy went on for over an hour and was held concurrently in other states too, namely Kedah, Melaka, Johor, and Sarawak, among others.
It is understood that the convoy is the lead-up to the bigger “Keluar dan #Lawan” rally planned on July 31.
Police were seen escorting the convoy and controlling the flow of traffic around the city centre.
A representative of Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR), the organiser of the event, said the police were helpful in controlling the traffic during the convoy.
“They (police) were nice and helpful. They guided us and there was no provocation from anyone,” Mohd Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar told reporters.
He urged the public to join in the protest by waving black flags from their cars while driving within 10km of their houses.
He also reminded protesters to obey all road traffic regulations, avoid provocation and observe SOPs.
Last Saturday, SSR organised a small-scale protest at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur involving a group of 20 protesters dressed in black.
They brought effigies to symbolise the rising number of deaths and suicides due to the pandemic and 14 black flags to convey the people’s anger across Malaysia.
The protesters demands included a call for the prime minister to resign, a full parliamentary session to be held, and an automatic loan moratorium for all.
The protest saw three of the organisers, namely Muhammad Nur Taufiq Azhar, Mohd Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar, and Mohammad Alshatri Abdullah, fined RM2,000 each for contravening Covid-19 SOPs.
Asked if SSR would continue with the rally next week despite being fined recently, Asraf said the punishment they had received would not halt the event.
“Of course, I’m scared. I’m just a normal civilian but I’m prepared for any possibility,” he added.
