Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PAS-Sik) made the claim while debating the national vaccination programme.
“I want to correct (everyone and say) that YB Pagoh has the majority to lead the country,” he said referring to a statement made by Ong Kian Ming (PH-Bangi) that no one has the majority at the moment.
However, this caused a stir among the opposition MPs who asked for proof.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) immediately stood up asking for a vote to be held.
“If it is true, let’s vote. I challenge you. Are you brave enough to go for a vote?” he asked.
Other opposition MPs also joined in to support Rayer in demanding for a vote.
Muhyiddin’s majority has been in question ever since Umno said that it will no longer support him.
Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has, in fact, asked to be moved out of the pro-government bloc into the independent bloc as he does not support the government.
Rayer added that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (BN-Bagan Datuk) had said that Umno would retract support from the government.
Many others also chimed in then, with M Karuppaiya (PH-Padang Serai) agreeing with Rayer that Muhyiddin’s support must be gauged.
“Accept the challenge and vote,” he said, while Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah) also asked Ahmad Tarmizi to show proof that Muhyiddin has the majority.
“Don’t just say he has the numbers. Show proof,” Cha added.
Chang Lih Kang (PH-Tanjong Malim) also threw in the challenge to vote.
Earlier Ong called for a temporary political ceasefire and a “Covid-19 moratorium agreement” where all politicians could work towards overcoming the pandemic and economic recovery.
He said all MPs must focus on showing the public that they could work together to form a proper exit strategy from the pandemic.
“I know many people are frustrated with Pagoh (Muhyiddin Yassin) because of the leadership crisis. If Port Dickson (Anwar Ibrahim), as the opposition leader, had the chance to be prime minister, he could do a better job than Pagoh,” he said.
“But we know that there is no MP here who has majority support in the Dewan.”
