Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad’s resignation as higher education minister comes hours after Ismail Sabri Yaakob claimed 31 Barisan Nasional MPs backed the PN government.

PETALING JAYA:
Higher education minister Noraini Ahmad has resigned following her party’s decision to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional-led government.

The Wanita Umno chief’s resignation comes on the heels of a press conference by deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, where he claimed that 31 Barisan Nasional MPs were still backing the PN government.

He had told reporters that he was unaware of Noraini’s stand as their attempts to contact her were unsuccessful.

Noraini’s resignation follows that of Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, who resigned as the government’s energy and natural resources minister on Tuesday, citing his loyalty to the party.

In a statement, Noraini thanked Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for giving her the chance to helm the ministry, but said she had to resign to abide by her party’s stand.

“The party’s decision will be implemented when Parliament sits,” she added.

The Parit Sulong MP said she believed the government had done its best to manage the pandemic, adding that her efforts to this end would continue although she was no longer a federal minister.
