The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council said this was especially prescient given the health and economic crises plaguing the country.
“Although it is common knowledge that only 100 MPs support Tan Sri Mahiaddin Md Yassin as prime minister and 120 MPs do not, he refused to resign honourably in line with Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution,” it said in a statement today.
“Therefore, the presidential council invites all MPs who oppose and reject Tan Sri Mahiaddin Md Yassin to jointly support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the prime ministerial candidate to prove support and form a new majority in Parliament.”
The move will restore credibility to the country’s leadership when it is needed most, the council said, to curb Covid-19 infections and drive economic recovery.
“It is very important for all parties to unite under a people-oriented government that is able to correct all the shortcomings and failures of Perikatan Nasional ahead of the vote of confidence in the prime minister.
“This is so that any takeover of the government will only take place with parties who agree on the principles and path of struggle, including institutional reform, good governance and an independent judicial institution,” it said.
The PH presidential council comprises PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
Questions surrounding Muhyiddin’s majority have lingered for some time, but intensified over the last few weeks after the Umno Supreme Council decided the party would withdraw its support for the PN-led government.
To date, reports suggest that as many as 15 of the party’s MPs no longer support the government, which would effectively erase the slim majority it once held.
Muhyiddin has since denied he has lost a parliamentary majority, and announced he will table a confidence motion in September to put it to the test.
