However, this mark was achieved on a day that saw another record high in the number of daily Covid-19 cases in the state today.
There were 2,583 new cases, which is 170 more than yesterday. It also means that the record for new cases was broken for the third consecutive day.
“The Sabah health department created a new record yesterday by administering 62,365 doses of the Covid-19 vaccines in one day,” Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Masidi Manjun told FMT.
“As of yesterday, 48.4% of the adult population in Sabah have received at least one dose while 25.8% have been fully vaccinated.”
Last week, Masidi, who is also the state local government and housing minister, said the state had been able to achieve its target of 59,000 daily vaccinations.
Meanwhile, on the continuing surge in Covid-19 cases, he explained that it was due to the state health department trying to clear the backlog of test samples.
“The daily cases will remain high over the next few days until the state health department is able to clear all the backlog samples.
“Backlog cases are positive cases that are only registered five days or more after the results of screenings are known,” he said, adding that 11.2%, or 289, of the cases today fell into that category.
On the breakdown by districts, Masidi said there was a marginal drop in the number of new cases detected in the state capital with 475, that is 119 cases fewer than yesterday.
“However, Kota Kinabalu remains the biggest contributor to new infections reported in the state.
“It is followed by Penampang (302), Tawau (240), Sandakan (170) and Tuaran (163), among others,” he said.
As with previous days, close contact screenings accounted for the bulk of the new cases with 58.2%, while symptomatic screenings made up 26.6%, and existing clusters 4.8%.
