Malaysia Airports expects passenger traffic at its local airports to gain traction once 70% to 80% of the population have been fully vaccinated.

PETALING JAYA:
The lifting of some restrictions, including on domestic travel, for those who are fully vaccinated bodes well for passenger traffic at all airports in the country, says Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

Group CEO Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said this will help towards the company’s gradual recovery over the course of the year, especially with the improving local vaccination rate.

“Recent announcements made by the government to allow some flexibility for fully vaccinated people to travel between states and engage in tourism activities within the same state -such as the Langkawi travel bubble emulating the Phuket Sandbox Model – is an early indication for cautious traffic resumption.

“We can expect domestic traffic to gain traction once 70% to 80% of the population have been fully vaccinated. This would be in tandem with the reopening of economic activities, local tourist spots, and the ‘Visiting Friends and Relatives’ tourism,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Shukrie added that MAHB is committed to restoring the confidence of travellers, highlighted by international airports in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu all receiving Airport Health Accreditation from Airports Council International.

He also shared the positive news of Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (ISG), which is wholly owned by MAHB, slowly moving towards pre-pandemic traffic levels, resulting in an encouraging first half-year performance.

According to MAHB, total passenger movements at the airport in Turkey were at 53% of pre-pandemic levels with flights from the airport 70% filled on average, making it the fourth busiest airport in Europe.

MAHB’s financial results for the half-year ending June 30 saw the group report revenue of RM660.3 million over the period, with the 64% drop in local revenue cushioned by the 14.6% increase in revenue from its Turkish operations.
