PARIS:
While wearing a helmet provides essential protection for cyclists in the event of falls – even minor ones – several manufacturers have now developed inflating cycling safety systems directly inspired by car airbags.

Here’s a look at three such products.

The inflatable helmet

French start-up Bumpair proposes a highly innovative inflatable helmet, featuring a highly resistant textile structure and pressurised air to protect the head effectively.

According to the manufacturer, this helmet is up to eight times more protective than a traditional helmet. This helmet is also particularly compact.

At any time, it can be deflated and stored in a bag or even in your pocket. It’s available on the manufacturer’s website from €189 (approx. $224).

The cyclist’s airbag

The Swedish company Hövding offers an alternative to regular cycle helmets in the form of an airbag that’s worn like a large scarf.

Easily adjustable, the Hövding 3 analyses head movements no less than 200 times per second and, in the event of an accident, the airbag inflates automatically to form a kind of protective hood around the head in 1/10th of a second.

The idea is to protect the cyclist’s skull and neck in the event of a fall. Moreover, a Bluetooth connection between the airbag and the user’s smartphone can immediately warn one or more contacts that an accident has occurred.

Paradoxically, using this product requires riders not to wear a regular helmet. It is priced from €349 (approx. $414).

The airbag vest

Like motorcyclists, cyclists can also now opt for a vest equipped with an airbag, which is automatically triggered in the event of a fall.

This French invention offers optimal protection of upper body areas in the event of an accident.

A set of sensors analyse the cyclist’s movements more than 100 times per second. When a fall is detected, the airbag is automatically triggered – in just 80 milliseconds – so that it’s perfectly inflated before impact with the ground.

It is designed to absorb the shock of the impact and protect the rider’s neck, back and chest. Once deployed, it stabilises the head, neck and spine.

It ensures efficient spinal alignment providing support and rigidity to the neck, trunk and spine, while protecting internal organs. The B’Safe is priced from €690 (approx. $810).
