KUALA LUMPUR:
The development of the drone industry through the Area 57 Research and Development (Area 57) is a strategic move to make Malaysia a drone hub, as it would create a multiplier effect for other industries, said the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT).

In a statement, MBOT said Area 57, launched by science, technology and innovation minister Dr Adham Baba yesterday, was also capable of increasing the demand for high-skilled labour.

“With the latest number of 44,051 registrations in 23 technology and technical fields, various opportunities can be explored and developed.

“The rapid development of drones has reached a wide range of industries supported by a combination of several technological aspects such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence, electronic technology, mechanical engineering technology, batteries, computer software, infra-red cameras and GPS modules,” the statement read.

MBOT encourages everyone, including industry players, higher learning institutions and government agencies, to reskill and upskill so that existing talents will always be relevant and competitive in line with the needs of the industry.

During the pre-launch ceremony yesterday, Adham said Area 57 was a centre of excellence for research and development as well as talent empowerment developed by Technology Park Malaysia.

It aims to advance the development of industries focusing on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with the provision of seven proposed values, namely to carry out research, development, testing, certification, commercialisation and maintenance of drone solutions and technology.

In its statement today, MBOT referred to a 2020 report by the Drone Industry Insights, which said the size of the drone market will increase annually by 2025 and that Asia will have the largest drone market in the world.

The report also said that globally, Malaysia was in the third position among drone service providers in 2019 after the US and Japan.

“This proves that Malaysia not only has great drone service providers but also world-class drone technology,” it said.
