The list of candidates will be finalised by the DAP central executive committee after Deepavali, says Damien Yeo.

MELAKA:
Melaka DAP says some of its incumbents may be dropped from the upcoming state election.

However, its secretary Damien Yeo said the DAP central leadership will have the final say on the candidates who will be nominated by the party under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner.

“There is the possibility that some incumbents may be dropped or perhaps it is a case of them not wanting to contest their seat anymore. These are all possibilities. Whatever it is, we leave it to the party’s central leadership to make the final decision.

“And of course at this moment, the Pengkalan Batu seat is vacant. So, there is also the possibility of an incumbent from another seat moving to contest it,” he said at a media conference here, today.

Yeo, the incumbent for the state seat of Duyong, said DAP would be fielding more than five new faces in the Melaka state election.

He said the list of candidates would be finalised by the DAP central executive committee after Deepavali and it would be announced by Lim Guan Eng, who is the party’s secretary-general.

Yeo added that 18 candidate nomination forms were bought by the party for the upcoming Melaka state polls on Nov 20.

Nomination day has been set for Nov 8.

In the 14th general election (GE14), held in May 2018, DAP won all eight state seats it contested in Melaka, namely, Gadek, Pengkalan Batu, Ayer Keroh, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana, Duyong, Bandar Hilir and Bemban.

In March last year, Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee quit DAP and expressed his support for Perikatan Nasional, causing the PH state government led by then chief minister Adly Zahari to collapse.

On Oct 29, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said that out of the 28 Melaka state seats, PKR would be contesting 11, Amanah (9) and DAP (8).
