PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s son, Muhammad Khalil (left), garnered the most votes in the central party elections, but the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s son, Nik Mohamad Abduh, failed to make it to the top 18.

KUALA TERENGGANU:
Former minister Khairuddin Aman Razali and a son of the late PAS president Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat lost in the central party elections today.

Khairuddin and Nik Mohamad Abduh failed to meet the threshold of 609 votes to qualify them to be part of the 18-member PAS central committee.

Met by reporters after the party’s muktamar here, Nik Abduh accepted the defeat and said he relished having fewer responsibilities now.

“I congratulate my friends who have won. I feel it is a big burden that I have let go. I will continue to assist the party wherever possible,” he said.

Khairuddin, a former plantation industries and commodities minister, said the defeat was “normal” and denied claims that a leaked audio recording of him deriding party president Abdul Hadi Awang was behind his ouster.

“Opportunistic enemies created the audio recording,” he said.

Hadi’s son, Muhammad Khalil, was the biggest winner in the central committee polls, garnering 884 votes.

Also among the top five were Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor who was second (877 votes), followed by Kamaruzzaman Mohamad (872), Khairil Nizam Khirudin (844) and Riduan Mohd Noor (841) .

The presidency and deputy presidency had been won unchallenged by Hadi and Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
