PETALING JAYA:
Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching has apologised for a social media gaffe, in which a term used colloquially in Melaka caused a stir among some netizens.

On Facebook recently, the DAP representative used a free “frame” to border her profile picture that bore the words “Lahabau Melaka, Jom Undi”.

While the word is often used as a greeting similar to “apa khabar” in Melaka, it is more widely used as a derogatory term akin to “useless” or “unreliable”.

In a post today, Teo expressed regret over her use of the frame, explaining that due to restrictions imposed during the Melaka state election, more emphasis had been placed on online campaigning.

“Human beings are never free from mistakes, including myself.

“There was an embarrassing language error on social media. I just wanted to campaign through free frames that can be found on Facebook without understanding the true meaning of the word.

“I humbly apologise for the mistake of preparing and uploading the campaign material that misused the language. I promise to be more careful after this in uploading social media material for the Melaka state election,” she said.
