KUALA LUMPUR:
From the brink of becoming an Asian economic tiger, Malaysia slipped into becoming a pariah nation after the 1MDB scandal broke out with the government then refusing to put things right, said Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Citing incidents linked to the 1MDB fiasco, he warned that it only took a small mistake to derail the nation from the right track, with dire consequences.

“Although we almost became an ‘Asian Tiger’ because of our rapid economic growth, Malaysia went off track due to several wrongdoings that were allowed to fester,” he said at the wing’s annual general meeting today.

Wan Fayhsal regretted that when the 1MDB scandal was exposed, the government then had refused to put things right.

“What did they do? The attorney-general was sacked while the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief was sidelined. The Bank Negara governor was replaced and our president, Muhyiddin Yassin, was sacked from his post as deputy prime minister for speaking out.

“As a consequence, Malaysia became a pariah nation,” he said.

However, Wan Fayhsal said he was thankful that the country was now back on the right path.

“International investors have started coming back. It was just announced that Penang will receive investments amounting to US$7 billion (RM29.5 million) from Intel.”

He called on party members to continue their fight for justice to ensure the country was governed properly, with the ultimate aim of achieving prosperity.
