The  Umno Pasir Putih division chief Zawawi Othman said putting off party elections would enable party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob to continue as prime minister without facing any problems.

PETALING JAYA:
An Umno division in Kelantan has proposed that the party’s elections be deferred until after the next general election, taking into consideration political “harmony and stability”.

The call comes after Puteri Umno made a similar call, with 171 out of 180 divisions asking for the party polls to be deferred.

Pasir Putih Umno division chief Zawawi Othman said this would also enable party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob to continue as prime minister without facing any problems.

He said the division members wanted the party to focus on governing the country and preparing for the coming general election.

In a statement, Zawawi said the Pasir Puteh grassroots also wanted the prime minister to take swift action against former central bank chief Zeti Akhtar Aziz, who was purportedly involved in the 1MDB scandal.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan recently said the party elections would be held next November, before the expiry of the term of the current leadership in December 2022.

He said party elections must be held by July at the branch level.
