Abang Jo unveils new Cabinet, Dr Sim made DCM

PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian has been appointed as one of Sarawak’s three deputy chief ministers (DCM) in the new state Cabinet.

His appointment was announced by Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg who unveiled his new state Cabinet line-up today.

Douglas Uggah Embas and Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who served as DCMs in the last administration, have been reappointed to their posts.

Sim’s appointment as DCM had been expected following the party’s stellar performance in the recent Sarawak elections where it won 13 seats.

He is also Sarawak’s first Chinese DCM in 10 years. The last Chinese DCM was former SUPP president George Chan, who served from 1996 to 2011.

Sim will continue to helm the state public health, housing, and local government ministry in the new Cabinet line-up.

Today, Abang Johari announced the appointment of 10 ministers and 26 assistant ministers in the new state Cabinet. They are as follows:

Minister in the chief minister’s department: John Sikie Tayai

Assistant ministers:

  • Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali (Law, MA63 and state-federal relations)
  • Gerawat Gala (Labour, immigration and project monitoring)
  • Abdullah Saidol (Corporate affairs, information, and UKAS)
  • Juanda Jaya (Integrity and Ombudsman)
  • Jefferson Jamit Unyat (Native law and customs)

Finance and new economy ministry

  • Minister: Abang Johari Openg
  • Second minister: Douglas Uggah Embas

Natural resources and urban development ministry

  • Minister: Abang Johari Openg
  • Second minister: Awang Tengah Ali Hasan
  • Assistant minister: Len Talif Salleh

Energy and environmental sustainability ministry

  • Minister: Abang Johari Openg
  • Assistant minister: Dr Hazland Abang Hipni

Infrastructure and port development ministry

  • Minister: Douglas Uggah Embas
  • Assistant minister I: Aidel Lariwoo
  • Assistant minister II: Majang Renggi

International trade and investment ministry

In a press release, Abang Johari said he hopes this new state Cabinet will be committed to all 34 points pledged in the 12th state election manifesto for the next five years emphasising the socio-economic development and well-being of Sarawakians.

“It is my conviction that the new Cabinet line-up is a functional Cabinet, equipped with competent and people-driven state ministers who with integrity and transparency, are focused on delivering effective services, while maintaining a solid system.

“We will execute policies towards the digital era, sustainable development, decarbonisation and new economy to ensure economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability. All these, will be driven by data and innovation,” he said.
