Some say the downing of the Malaysian airliner in 2014 by pro-Russian rebels is reason enough to back Ukraine in the crisis.

PETALING JAYA:
Netizens are taking to Twitter to voice support for Ukraine, which came under attack from Russia earlier today, citing the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in July 2014.

DAP’s Kasthuri Patto said Malaysians must remember that MH17 was shot down by Russian-backed rebels in the Donetsk area of Ukraine.

She said Wisma Putra must make a stand and urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine “for the sake of humanity”.

Muda’s Dian Lee said the conflict had already “cost too much”, including the downing of MH17. “Shame on you Putin, the world will not forgive or forget.”

Another Twitter user, @aima015, said Malaysians were affected by the Russian military years ago after “they shot down MH17”.

“We should absolutely stand with Ukraine”.

One “Nor” said the downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight, which killed all 298 people on board, was the only reason to stand with Ukraine. “They died as a result of Putin’s imperialist ambitions.”

Another user, @amzarul, said he stood in solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine. “As a Malaysian, I hope those involved in the downing of MH17 are sent to prison”

MH17 was hit by a BUK missile as it flew over eastern Ukraine while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. There were 43 Malaysian passengers and crew members among the victims.

Three Russians and a Ukrainian were subsequently charged with the shooting down of the passenger jet.

Russia’s ground forces crossed into Ukraine earlier today after Putin announced an offensive. Ukrainian officials said Russia was primarily targeting military infrastructure and silos.
