Lim Guan Eng said the decision by Anwar Ibrahim’s PKR not to retaliate against Muda for standing in Larkin will help maximise Pakatan Harapan’s chances of defeating its opponents.

JOHOR BAHRU:
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has thanked PKR for not retaliating against Muda for contesting in the Larkin seat.

This comes after PKR said it will not field candidates in the other six seats Muda was contesting in, out of respect for DAP and Amanah which had made way for the new party in the six constituencies.

In a press conference, Lim said all parties needed to put their own interests aside to maximise the opposition’s chances of beating Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.

“We appreciate every effort to ensure a one-to-one fight. We also appreciate what PKR has done in not retaliating against Muda for contesting (against PKR) in Larkin.

“That must be put on record and appreciated. This is in line with Pakatan Harapan’s big tent spirit,” he said.

Asked which candidate DAP would support in Larkin, Lim said his party would campaign for whoever had the best chance of defeating BN or PN.

“We want to campaign in areas where we can maximise the chances of a candidate defeating BN.

“In that respect, we are part of PH. That’s the reality, but our main opponent is Umno.

“I must say that I’m disappointed that we could settle every seat except this one (Larkin). But we should move past that.

“We have to put in a concerted effort to unite and form the government in Johor.”

The Bagan MP was responding to Amanah leader Khalid Samad, who on Friday said the party would back PKR instead of Muda in Larkin, since the former was a coalition partner.

“I think DAP and Amanah have played our roles. But we don’t want to comment or pass judgment on others,” said Lim.

Meanwhile, Muda secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said there were no discussions among the party leaders for their Larkin candidate to withdraw from the contest.

Amira, who was also at Lim’s press conference, said Muda’s decision came after several rounds of negotiations, and was final.

“We will move forward. I also want to echo what Lim mentioned. For now, we must focus our efforts on defeating BN to ensure we can form the state government in Johor.”

Lim also said there was no update on PH’s candidate for the menteri besar post, adding that any discussion will be held in Parliament as the Dewan Rakyat sitting starts tomorrow.

“We’ve all been busy campaigning. So, at the moment, the answer is ‘no’.”
