PONTIAN:
Najib Razak has hit out at Dr Mahathir Mohamad, urging Johor voters not to be “tricked again” by his open letters to them in the state election campaign.

In the latest exchange between the two former prime ministers, Najib said Mahathir had failed to lead the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government effectively in his second tenure at the helm, following the 14th general election (GE14) in 2018.

“This ‘grandfather’ keeps on writing letters, and he has already written three letters in which he repeatedly talks only about Najib.

“But what did he do in his 22 months as prime minister (leading the PH administration)? What did he do? I don’t think voters want to be deceived again,” he said while campaigning for Barisan Nasional (BN) in Benut today.

Najib urged Johoreans to vote wisely and not to fall for the lies and empty promises Mahathir was making.

“Mahathir and PH failed after the last general election. But BN can steer Johor back on the right track towards progress. The man who will lead the charge is Johor BN chief Hasni Mohammad, our menteri besar candidate.”

In his latest letter on March 2, Mahathir reminded Johor voters that working with “kleptocrats and the court cluster” in Umno would see them eventually at the losing end.

He also said Johoreans had successfully stopped Najib in GE14 but their effort was stalled  when PH was toppled. He blamed Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s ambitious drive to become prime minister for the collapse of the PH administration.

Najib reiterated that BN was the only coalition that voters could rely upon compared with the opposition parties including Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional.

“PH’s candidates are useless. PAS is also useless. Amanah also can’t make it. All that’s left is Pejuang, which is even worse. That party is not even relevant.”
