JOHOR BAHRU:
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has outlined four directions towards developing and improving the country’s landscapes.

The first, he said, involves efforts to streamline the country’s landscape network system with priority given to expanding green infrastructure through a comprehensive development programme.

“The second will harness the potential and economic value of the landscape industry, which should be seen as having economic value and a source of returns for the country.

“The third is to protect our landscape assets, which will be difficult to restore,” he said in his speech at the 2022 National Landscape Day celebration at Taman Bandar Ekoflora here yesterday.

The fourth direction, he said, was to improve the quality of national landscaping services, where a complete landscaping organisation at all levels would provide the best services possible.

With these proposals, Ismail expressed the hope that the country’s landscape development in the next 25 years would be more advanced and offer superior landscape quality to be enjoyed by future generations.

All these efforts should start today, he said, adding that the government hoped for all states to have a public park with the concept of a ‘Taman Persekutuan’ (Federal Park) to provide the public access to landscaped areas.

He said this would indirectly increase the number of green zones in urban areas, which were a major contributor to low carbon and comfort that would improve the quality of life.

He added that 9,467 hectares nationwide had been developed into parks in the past 25 years and with the cooperation of all parties, had led to better quality landscapes.

“The people now realise the importance of landscapes in the environment and their well-being.

“Public parks and recreational areas have been turned into therapy spaces in an effort to relieve the stresses of life that directly improve our mental and physical well-being.

“Based on data, the number of visitors to the Bukit Kiara Federal Park rose by 287.10% in 2021 compared to the previous year. This proves the importance of the park as the main recreational space for Keluarga Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
