Tony Pua’s services are still needed by DAP, especially as it faces GE15, says newly elected party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

PETALING JAYA:
Tony Pua remains a “very important asset” to DAP despite losing his place in its central executive committee (CEC), says newly elected party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

In a Facebook post, Loke said he understood Pua’s disappointment on missing out on the CEC elections last Sunday “as it was like his contributions to the party went unappreciated”.

“But this is politics. Our efforts do not always get the recognition it deserves, what more the appreciation. The delegates’ decision has to be received with an open heart, as Pua has stated.

“I want to openly state that Pua is a very important asset to DAP. His services and contributions are still very much needed. I hope he will continue helping the party and I to face every challenge ahead of us, especially GE15,” he said.

Loke said Pua had been outspoken in Parliament in unveiling various issues and scandals involving government projects, adding that the Damansara MP backed these with facts and numbers.

He also said Pua had been DAP’s spokesman on the annual federal budget since 2008, consistently explaining the details of the budget to the public, the media and even fellow DAP MPs.

“Before the 1MDB issue was understood by Malaysians around 2016 and 2017, Pua was willing to go to every corner of the nation to shed light on the matter in various ceramahs or forums.

“Surely his every effort given over the 1MDB issue had contributed to Pakatan Harapan’s victory in GE14,” he said.

Loke also praised Pua for being a committed and responsible party leader during his terms in the CEC, citing how he led various projects in East Malaysia.

Pua, who was Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary during PH’s 22 months in power, had expressed surprise at missing out on a place in the CEC.

He noted that his zeal in “averaging up” the quality of DAP elected representatives might have offended some within the party, but he had no regrets for giving more opportunities to young and talented members.

Pua, who had backed political cooperation with the Muhyiddin Yassin government last year, obtained 744 votes at the party polls, far behind Sabah assembly member Jannie Lasimbang, who secured the 30th position with 877 votes.
