Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the probe came at a time when the judiciary was perceived to be getting back its independence and integrity after a long time.

PETALING JAYA:
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his concerns that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s probe of Court of Appeal judge Nazlan Mohd Ghazali might be seen as a form of political pressure and interference.

His comments came in response to reports that the anti-graft agency is probing Nazlan on the alleged ownership of an unexplained amount of money worth RM1 million in his bank account.

He said the judiciary was perceived to be getting back its independence and integrity after a long time, with the government not making any attempts to fix the problems all this while.

“A probe like this will be seen as a form of political pressure and interference,” he said in a statement today.

He also said the judiciary had its own oversight body to ensure the integrity of judges. This body, added Anwar, ensures there is a clear separation of powers.

“Therefore, MACC’s interference will be seen as violating this principle (of separation of powers),” added the Port Dickson MP.

Anwar is not the only opposition MP who has gone after the anti-graft agency for its probe into Nazlan.

Earlier today, DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng slammed the agency for immediately launching an investigation into the judge when it had failed to do the same into its chief commissioner, Azam Baki, over alleged ownership of shares and warrants worth millions of ringgit.
