PETALING JAYA:
The PKR leadership has urged party election candidates to lay off personal attacks and instead bring forward ideas and opinions to help rebuild the party.

The central leadership council said all eyes were on them during the campaign period: not only the people, but the party’s enemies were also watching.

Party members should be mindful of their actions during the election campaign period, the council said. The PKR elections will be held from May 13-22.

The council’s reminder to lay off personal attacks did not mention any names. However, it comes a day after vice-president Rafizi Ramli and party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had exchanged words about their personal backgrounds.

The two men are contesting the post of deputy president, which has been vacant since March 2020 after then deputy president Azmin Ali and his supporters left Pakatan Harapan to help form a new government.

The PKR leadership said: “The rakyat are watching and evaluating the attitudes of candidates and (their) supporters, while (our) political enemies are ready around the clock to attack the party and its leadership. Therefore, the 2022 party elections must be done in the spirit of the Keadilan family.”

In a campaign speech last week, Saifuddin had said he had served the party for 22 years without interruption, making a veiled attack on Rafizi, who recently returned to active politics after a two-year hiatus. Rafizi had also said he had been instrumental in helping Saifuddin to his present position, which Saifuddin denied.

The leadership statement, released by communications director Fahmi Fadzil, said candidates for the party elections and their supporters should remain disciplined and maintain order until polling day on May 22, as the party would focus its strength on facing the next general election.

A total of 11,282 candidates are contesting the party elections, including 20 candidates for the positions on the central leadership council, and 17 for the four vice-presidencies.

Party president Anwar Ibrahim has retained his post uncontested.
