More than 500 Rohingya refugees broke out of an immigration depot in Kedah last month complaining of ill-treatment.

PETALING JAYA:
Some countries could accept twice as many Rohingya refugees for resettlement from Malaysia, foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah said today.

He said several countries had indicated their willingness to increase their acceptance of more Rohingya refugees in Malaysia into their respective countries for the resettlement process.

He said the resettlement process of the refugees to third countries had been disrupted in the past two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Bernama.

“There are indications that some countries have agreed to double the acceptance of the number of Rohingya refugees (who are now in Malaysia),” he said when asked to comment about a breakout by more than 500 Rohingya refugees from an immigration depot in Kedah last month.

Saifuddin said he had met the director of the UN refugee agency in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the Rohingya resettlement process.

The UNHCR estimates that there are about 103,810 Rohingyas in Malaysia.
