In 2013, Najib Razak had instituted a royal commission of inquiry to investigate the arrival of undocumented migrants in droves into Sabah.

PENAMPANG:
Former prime minister Najib Razak has denied that Barisan Nasional (BN) was involved in the identity card (IC) scandal, which allegedly involved giving ICs to undocumented migrants to enable them to vote in elections.

On the other hand, he said the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS)-led government was once given the task of resolving the issue of the high number of undocumented foreigners in the state.

In 2013, Najib instituted a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the arrival of undocumented migrants in droves.

The commission probed allegations of migrants being given ICs systematically, leading them to being granted citizenship.

In 2015, Najib formed a foreigners’ technical management committee to look into the RCI’s findings and proposals to manage foreigners in Sabah. It was headed by former chief minister and then PBS chief Joseph Pairin Kitingan.

Najib said the priority now was to strengthen Sabah’s borders, beefing up its safety and bolstering efforts in development.

“That is BN’s agenda in the state,” he told reporters after attending a programme that was part of the BN convention here today.

The IC scandal issue resurfaced after Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister Maximus Ongkili claimed that a BN component party had given ICs to undocumented migrants.

He also claimed BN had failed to settle the migrant issue in Sabah.
