PETALING JAYA:
The Selangor government has allocated RM1 million to implement the Selangor Legal Aid Fund programme to help residents in need of free legal services in civil cases.

Menteri besar Amirudin Shari said this programme, which also involves the Malaysian Bar as well as the Selangor Bar, will be implemented for three years.

“We will work with the Selangor Bar to provide help and support to the people of this state who need legal services but cannot afford them.

“This is to help them get fair treatment so that they are not deprived of justice. There are many urban poor in Selangor asking for legal help from the Selangor Bar,” he said at a press conference.

Meanwhile, state social welfare and employee empowerment committee member V Ganabatirau, who is responsible for coordinating the fund, said the programme will mainly focus on civil cases involving family and employee issues.

“Each case will be subsidised RM1,500. For class action suits, the subsidy will go up to a maximum of RM2,000. The lawyers will be selected by the Selangor Bar.

“So far, RM300,000 from the RM1 million fund has been disbursed for this programme,” the Kota Kemuning assemblyman said.
