Education minister Radzi Jidin said the ministry was collecting new data on where these students were at present.
“We will look in detail at the student data. We will share this data in the near future,” he told reporters after the Sabah Teacher Education Transformation programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.
Recently, the media reported that 390,000 (or 72.1%) of students had decided not to continue their studies after their SPM.
Commenting on these reported figures, Radzi said the study was not done comprehensively.
He said the older generation, who are now 70 to 80 years old, had different reasons for not continuing their education compared to the younger generation today.
“That’s why we have to look at this more deeply. I don’t want to talk about the 72%. Let us explain that based on the data we got from students who have completed SPM,” he said.
On Sabah students, Radzi said his ministry was working with other agencies to help those who have difficulty going to school in the state.
He said if the matter involved an infrastructure issue, the ministry would find an approach to help these students get the best access to education.
