Wanita BN leader Noraini Ahmad said the movement appealed to the government to amend the Federal Constitution so that the meaning of the word “father” in the citizenship clause be extended to include “mother” or be changed to the word “parents”.
Malaysian women have protested against a recent appeal court ruling that overturned a High Court decision that the citizenship clause should be read to mean that children could derive citizenship from either parent. However the appeal court said the word “father” in the clause could not be extended to include the mother.
Wanita BN also called for the establishment of a women’s university and a bank for women. The proposals are among six resolutions adopted at the movement’s convention in Kuala Lumpur today.
At the opening of the women’s wing congress today, Noraini had urged BN to support a 30% quota of election seats to be reserved for women.
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the coalition would take up the resolutions as part of BN’s manifesto for the general election.
Noraini said the other proposals were that women with children below the age of two should be given the option to work from home without suffering a cut in salary and allowances.
Noraini said other proposed resolutions included a call for children who dropped out of school to be allowed to return, and a proposal to extend the supplementary food programme to all needy children instead of only those from families in the B40 group.
The resolutions were handed over to Zahid for discussion by the BN top leadership before they are submitted to the government.
