In a statement, Kuching police chief Ahsmon Bajah said three investigation papers had been opened under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.
The probe was launched after a video of the incident had gone viral on social media.
No arrests have been made.
Ahsmon called on members of the public with information on the incident to come forward and assist the police.
The viral video caught the moment that the motorcyclist rammed the woman’s vehicle from behind. He then parked in front of the car and approached the vehicle, pretending to check the damages he had caused.
The suspect then snatched the victim’s bag and fled, while the woman attempted to chase him, in vain.
