Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim had called on DAP’s leadership to state whether it agreed with ex-AG Tommy Thomas’ remarks against having a ‘Malay government’.

PETALING JAYA:
A DAP leader is puzzled as to why ex-law minister Zaid Ibrahim took aim at his party over former attorney-general Tommy Thomas’ remarks against having a “Malay government”.

DAP organising secretary Steven Sim said he could not understand why Zaid was linking Thomas’ statement at a forum over the weekend to his party.

Nonetheless, the Bukit Mertajam MP told FMT that DAP did not care about the ethnicity of its members. He said what mattered to the party was that its leaders were trustworthy, just, and took care of the people.

Sheikh Umar Bagharib, a member of DAP’s central leadership council, agreed with Sim, saying the party wanted Malays who were good, fair and upheld integrity.

“DAP wants Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban, Kadazan, and others who possess the same attributes,” he added.

This comes after Thomas said the opposition must get voters to ask themselves whether having a “Malay government” had made the country better and more efficient.

The ex-AG claimed the reason Dr Mahathir Mohamad had resigned as the seventh prime minister was because of the impression that the government was not “Malay enough”. Two and a half years later, the Cabinet was dominated by Malays and non-Malays had been sidelined, he said.

In response to Thomas, Zaid said Thomas’ stereotyping was not beneficial and asked, “So, what type of Malays are acceptable to DAP?”

He said this was important because Malay Pakatan Harapan supporters needed to know if its leaders were useful or “merely stooges of DAP”.

The senior lawyer also called on DAP’s leadership to state whether it agreed with Thomas’ analysis of the matter, and said the party must issue a statement in the event it disagrees.

Meanwhile, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong said DAP always gave opportunities for Malay leaders to progress in the party, denying that they were mere stooges.

He added that DAP always emphasised on unity and wanted the nation to be democratic and fair to all.
