KUALA LUMPUR:
An aide to Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has lodged a police report denying that the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Lenggong parliamentary seat has signed an agreement backing Umno president Ahmad Zahidi Hamidi for the prime minister’s post.

The purported agreement, which went viral recently, also contained a stipulation which required the candidate to insist that any government formed with the cooperation of Umno and BN after the 15th general election (GE15) drop all criminal investigations and court charges involving the top party leaders of Umno and BN.

The document appeared to bear the signatures of Shamsul, who is BN’s communications chief, Zahid and Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

“I met Shamsul at our office at Menara Dato Onn and asked him about the authenticity of the document yesterday,” said Shamsul’s political secretary, Azizan Zain, when met outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

“I was informed that he never signed any such agreement and that the document which is circulating is fake and malicious,” he said.

Azizan said he believed the circulation of the document was an attempt to slander Shamsul, Zahid, and BN ahead of GE15.

He urged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter and haul up those who shared the alleged document.

Yesterday, Zahid’s press secretary Fadzlette Othman Merican denied the existence of any such agreement and labelled the document making its rounds on social media a ‘fake’.

A report published by The Vibes had claimed that Zahid had given Umno candidates their “surat watikah” (appointment letters) to contest in GE15 on condition that they sign an agreement backing him for the country’s top post if BN secured victory at the polls.

Zahid, who is also the BN chairman, has described the claim a “lie”.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was previously named BN’s prime ministerial candidate, a decision which Zahid described on Oct 16 as final.
