In a statement, the irrigation and drainage department said the project was approved under the Off-Budget Flood Mitigation Programme under the environment and water ministry.
“The design of this project is based on the results of the study of the Flood Mitigation Master Plan and Environmentally Friendly Drainage System for the Seberang Perai Selatan district prepared by the department in 2017. The study for the Sungai Jawi flood mitigation project was held and completed in September 2022.
“To speed up its implementation, it is planned that the project be constructed with the design-and-build method. It is expected to be completed by 2030,” the department said.
According to the department, the total area affected by floods is 78.92 sq km involving Taman Sungai Duri Permai, Taman Sungai Duri Indah, Kampung Sungai Duri, Taman Jawi Permai, Taman Jawi Jaya, Kampung Sethu, Perkampungan Jawi, Kampung Titi Hitam, Kampung Surau, Jalan Federation in Pekan Jawi and Jalan Negeri in Changkat.
It added that, when completed, the project is expected to protect more than 6,000 residents from flood disasters.
The area at risk of flooding will also be significantly reduced from 7,892 hectares to 790 hectares only, involving residential, commercial and agricultural areas.
