PETALING JAYA:
Ismail Sabri Yaakob has pledged that his Cabinet will be smaller if Barisan Nasional wins the general election.

Ismail, who is BN’s prime minister candidate, admitted that the Cabinet he “inherited” from his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin was bloated, according to Bernama.

“Yes, (the Cabinet is) too big and I will definitely make my (next) Cabinet smaller,” he said during a special interview with several television networks broadcast tonight.

Ismail said his next Cabinet would comprise both politicians and technocrats.

Ismail’s current Cabinet has 31 ministers, including four who were made senior ministers. His government also has 38 deputy ministers.

Except for a slight reshuffle, the Umno vice-president retained most of the ministers and deputies who served under Muhyiddin.

Ismail also said, if given the chance to lead the country again, he would want to tackle the “extreme” bureaucracy in government departments.

He acknowledged that red tape in granting various approvals had deterred foreign investors from entering Malaysia.

“And when compared to other countries, approvals need long periods (in Malaysia). Bureaucratic red tape is something that needs to be focused on.”
