Noh has also joined the call for Zahid to resign as president of the party following Barisan Nasional’s (BN) defeat in the general election (GE15).
“I don’t resent being dropped as a candidate for GE15, but I regret the way I was axed from the list. It is as if the president does not appreciate all that I have done for the party.
“I have lost confidence in him,” he told reporters at the party’s headquarters today.
The six-term MP was dropped as BN’s candidate to make way for Tanjong Karang Wanita Umno chief Habibah Yusof. She lost to Perikatan Nasional’s Zulkafperi Hanapi in yesterday’s polls.
Noh added that Zahid should follow in the footsteps of former party president Najib Razak who relinquished his position after BN lost in the 2018 general election (GE14).
“Let the young ones lead the party now. Even as party president, he only won with a majority of 348 votes,” he said, referring to Zahid’s victory in the Bagan Datuk parliamentary seat.
Noh, however, remains an Umno Supreme Council member and will attend its meetings as usual.
Besides Noh, Shahril Hamdan also stepped down as Umno’s information chief, citing “collective responsibility” over the coalition’s devastating loss in GE15.
Meanwhile, Wanita MIC chief Mohana Muniandy also urged Zahid to resign as president of Umno and chairman of BN.
“Let this be a lesson for all of us. His resignation will also pave the way for other leaders to bring about change, so that BN will not face worse rejection in the future,” she said in a statement.
In yesterday’s polls, BN only managed to win 30 seats. Its rivals Pakatan Harapan (with Muda) won 82 seats, while Perikatan Nasional won 73 seats.
