In a statement, Shahril said there has to be collective responsibility over the coalition’s devastating loss in the general election (GE15).
“I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me and will never forget it,” he said.
“This is about the greater good. Like many others, I will remain loyal to Umno (because) the party’s fight is not over yet.”
Shahril contested the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat in GE15 and was involved in a four-cornered fight. However, he was defeated by Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Adly Zahari, who is a former Melaka chief minister.
The Umno deputy Youth chief also said he agreed with Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s call for party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to resign.
“The number one Umno leader and BN chairman should set an example by stepping down and taking accountability for this loss.
“Let other people lead the discussions on the next big step the party must take,” he said.
Earlier today, Onn Hafiz said Zahid should resign and that it was clear the Malays have rejected Umno.
He added that BN only won nine parliamentary seats in Johor and none in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka, Kelantan and Terengganu.
In GE15, BN only managed to win 30 seats, while PH (with Muda) won 82, and Perikatan Nasional won 73.
