PETALING JAYA:
An animal rights group has urged the police to take action against an individual accused of torturing baby long-tailed macaques.

Lawyer-activist Rajesh Nagarajan said a report was filed by Hak Asasi Hidupan Liar Malaysia (Hidup) on Jan 20 with detailed information on the alleged perpetrator who was believed to be in Malaysia, but no action had been taken.

“Despite a passage of time of more than three weeks and detailed information being provided to the police, the police have failed to arrest and charge the said individual,” he said in a statement.

As such, Rajesh said the group was demanding that the police immediately investigate and charge the person involved under the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Last month, Hidup filed a report after receiving a tip-off from animal welfare groups, Lady Freethinker from the US and Action for Primates from the UK.

Rajesh said the report was filed upon receiving information from the groups that the perpetrator had recorded the torture of the primates and sold the footage on a Telegram group named “Monkey Haters”.

Calling the videos “torture porn”, Rajesh said the footage showed the monkeys being mutilated, dismembered, hit with blunt objects, burned, boiled and skinned alive.

She also said if anyone in the Telegram group wanted to watch the full videos, they would have to pay the perpetrator a sum of money.
